Abstract

The understanding of psychological health as an expression of dynamic self-regulatory processes has gained prominence in experience-centered clinical approaches. In Gestalt therapy, this perspective is deepened through organismic self-regulation the organism’s ability to creatively adjust to its environment, seeking balance, need satisfaction, and self-actualization. This article analyzes its theoretical foundations and clinical implications via a theoretical-reflective review based on Perls, Hefferline & Goodman (1951) and Goldstein (2000). It demonstrates that self-regulation is relational and situated, requiring field conditions favorable to full contact. It discusses how interruption of this flow can lead to suffering and neurotic repetition and the therapist’s role in facilitating a field that fosters awareness and spontaneous experiential flow. It concludes that trust in the organism’s inherent wisdom, together with attentive and context-sensitive perception, underlies a core clinical tenet of Gestalt therapy, capable of fostering meaningful transformation in psychological practice.
